What Could Go Wrong If You Have a Badly Maintained Server?
I know that as a small business person, you are probably tight on cash. All business startups go through this stage. At some level or another, capital maintenance and resource allocation are top of mind. If you are the head of a struggling company, you know that every red cent has to be invested properly.
Unfortunately, it is precisely in this type of setting that CEO’s and business owners make a very common mistake. They try to cut corners and save nickels and dimes hiring the wrong server maintenance company.
Make no mistake about it, all sorts of disasters can occur if you have a badly maintained server. Just how bad can things get? Well, first of all, there’s the common problem of database issues.
If you are running a website that is in any way, shape or form complicated, you will need a database. This is especially true if you have a lot of people going through your website performing all sorts of operations.
If there’s a conflict in the database or a configuration issue, your website is going to start acting weird. Your website is going to produce all sorts of random results and it’s going to blow up in your company’s face. People will talk and your brand can go up in smoke. Bad news.
Second, when people load up your website, the website loads slowly due to an internal software conflict. Now, keep in mind that this is an issue separate and apart from your host. Your host might be doing an awesome job connecting you to their data pipeline. With everything else being equal, your speed is actually fast, but due to the software issue on your server hogging up all sorts of resources, the end user sees a very slow loading site.
This is a problem because it goes straight to the heart of brand impression. If they think that your website is just worthless, then your brand is going to be tainted. All that time, effort and money you invested in building up your brand is completely wasted.
Another issue that you need to look at is the case of the disappearing website. Again, your website might be in an awesome data center, it might be hosted by one of the most trusted businesses in the industry, but none of that would matter because your website cannot be found.
What’s really tragic is that you can’t just turn around and point the finger at your host because they have nothing to do with it. Instead, your website is inaccessible because of software, database and other internal issues that are specific to your server.
Another problem is problematic customer experience. Maybe you’re saving money with a low cost server maintenance provider. When you call with a problem, they blow you off. When you call with a problem, they have no idea what you’re talking about.
This is a waste of time. It’s probably also going to infuriate you and sadly, your problems won’t go away any time soon. This all leads to long term brand damage.
Keep In Mind
Always remember that your ISP and your hosting company are off the hook. They have nothing to do with any of these issues. Instead, it has everything to do with the software you chose to have installed on your server.
So do yourself a big favor and be very careful who you do business with as far as server maintenance is concerned. Server maintenance may seem like it’s one of those back-end operations that nobody really sees, but believe me, it has a tremendous impact on how your brand is going to be perceived from all four corners of the globe.
